Atomic: Living In Dread And Promise (played loud*)

Mark Cousins provocative new documentary portrait of our atomic age to tour cinemas in UK from 21st October.

Film features electrifying new soundtrack from Mogwai.

Hot on the heels of a packed-out run at the 2016 Edinburgh International Festival,    Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise (played loud*) - the highly acclaimed new film from celebrated filmmaker Mark Cousins (The Story of Film: An Odyssey) - tours UK cinemas this Autumn.
A powerful, visceral investigation of life and death in the nuclear age, this documentary portrait combines rare archive footage with an electrifying new original soundtrack by Mogwai (Les Revenants soundtrack).
With images of protest marches, Cold War confrontation, Chernobyl and Fukushima, Cousins’ impressionistic film is a kaleidoscope of the appalling destructive power of the atomic bomb, and also the beauty and benefits of x-rays and MRI scans. In the era of the new £18 billion Hinkley Point power plant, the warning of the film is as relevant as ever.  The atomic world is beautiful but, soon after discovering its power, human beings used it in murderous and dangerous ways.
Mogwai’s compelling recorded soundtrack to the film perfectly encapsulates the nightmare of the nuclear age, but also its dreamlike beauty.
"The subject of Atomic is overwhelming and explosive, and we wanted the soundtrack to be the same" says Mark.  “Audiences should, if possible, feel the sound waves of the music in their bodies, which is why it'll be playing it louder than usual.  When Mogwai played Atomic live in Edinburgh, Coventry and London- - as well as in Hiroshima and in other countries - the emotions were palpable.  We want to give people who weren't able to get to those gigs some sense of their power.  Mogwai and I are delighted that these screenings are being arranged.”
“I saw Mogwai perform the score of Mark’s stunning film at the Edinburgh International Festival back in August, and was completely blown away by the whole, thunderous experience" says Rod White, Head of Programming at Filmhouse Edinburgh who are distributing the film. “How delighted we are to be giving this mind-blowing film its rightful place in the nation’s cinemas, who will all be sent the film with the filmmakers’ recommendations of just exactly how loud it should be played!”
The UK cinema tour opens at the GFT Glasgow on 21st October and Filmhouse Edinburgh 28th - 30th October before touring the country taking in everywhere from Manchester’s state of the art HOME to Scotland’s oldest purpose-built cinema, the beautiful Bo’ness Hippodrome.
*The film was made to be played loud.  This tour will honour the artists’ intentions and ear plugs will be provided on request.
