Filmhouse has been at the centre of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape for over 40 years, with an ambition to transform people’s lives through film. Our vision for the new Filmhouse is to provide unrivalled spaces and facilities for everyone to enjoy, while celebrating cinema and filmmaking in all its diversity.
Early in 2020 we shared our plans for a new home on Festival Square, and a major public consultation was launched in March.
The designs were updated in response to public feedback, expert advice and input from the Council’s Planning department, and we also developed more detailed proposals for Festival Square that we believe will help create a more inviting and valued public space for the people of Edinburgh.
On Wednesday 9 December 2020 we submitted our Planning Application to the City of Edinburgh Council, the opportunity to comment ended on Monday 1 February 2021. You can see the full Planning Application here (click).

MORE ABOUT THE NEW FILMHOUSE BUILDING
The New Filmhouse will be a world-class centre for film designed by Richard Murphy Architects and will create a landmark home for Filmhouse and Edinburgh International Film Festival. It will be a local, national and international hub for community engagement and learning, talent and skills development, film programming and audience engagement, innovation and enterprise, and networking which will benefit both the city’s residents and Scotland’s film industry.
The design of the New Filmhouse has evolved following the extensive consultation process, resulting in a reduction in the height, improved access arrangements within the building and more detailed proposals for the successful management of Festival Square as a public space.
The key design principles for the new building are:
- The building must provide the quantity and quality of spaces needed by Filmhouse and Edinburgh International Film Festival to achieve our ambitions and operate sustainably year-round.
- In line with our core value of inclusion, all public and work spaces must be fully accessible and welcoming to all.
- To support our strategies to address the climate emergency, we’re aiming to ensure that the operation of the building is as close to carbon neutral as it can be.
- The outdoor landscaping must maximise the potential of the public space, be fully accessible, encourage sustainable transport use and create a welcoming and inspiring environment for all.
