The death of George Floyd, an African American man, at the hands of white police officers in the US sent shockwaves across the world. The Black Lives Matter movement intensified. And Scotland was not getting off lightly. The epicentre of this has been in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh. A 150-foot statue of Henry Dundas has ignited a fiery debate that has sent ripples throughout Scotland. The Scottish BAFTA®-winning documentary Scotland, Slavery & Statues shows the twists and turns of this four-year story – the delays, dynamics and arguments about whether slavery should be mentioned on the plaque - unravelling what this statue symbolises for Scotland as a nation.
Strike For Freedom: Frederick Douglass in Scotland - Parisa Urquhart/ 2019/ UK/ English/ 15m
Frederick Douglass, a world-renowned author, orator and activist had a major impact on Scotland. His lifelong mission was to 'tell the story of the slave' and when he fled to the UK after exposing his slaveholders’ name and deeds, he fell in love with Scotland and the Scots fell in love with him. At the time the Scots saw Douglass as the icon of the freedom struggle. It’s only now that Scotland is finally acknowledging this.
We are pleased to announce that the screening will be followed by an in-person discussion chaired by Dr Peggy Brunache, with Parisa Urquhart, Sir Geoff Palmer OBE and Cllr Graham Campbell.
Sir Geoff Palmer OBE – Chancellor and Emeritus professor at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, a human rights activist and contributor to both films.
Cllr Graham Campbell – Founder of BLM Scotland, Chair of Africa in Motion Film Festival and contributor to Scotland, Slavery & Statues.
Parisa Urquhart – A Scottish/Iranian producer and director of both films, one of which won a Scottish BAFTA in the ‘Single Documentary’ category in November 2021.
Dr Peggy Brunache – Lecturer at Glasgow University in Transatlantic Slavery
