Audio Description and Enhanced Volume

Audio Description (marked as AD in our brochure) screenings offer a service to our blind or visually impaired visitors.

While the film’s main soundtrack plays through the cinema speakers in the usual manner, Audio Description users listen through a headset to a pre-recorded narrator describing what’s happening on the screen at selected breaks during the film’s dialogue.

All three cinemas are fitted infra-red transmitters that are compatible with our Sennheiser hearing aid neck loops as well as our in-ear headsets to allow for Audio Description. The availability of Audio Description screenings is dependent on whether the material has been provided by the film distribution companies, but will be available when possible.

Enhanced Volume is available for our visitors who may benefit from hearing the film’s audio louder or more directly. It is available for all of our film screenings with use of our in-ear hearing loops as well as our hearing aid compatible neck loops.

Baby & Carer

Our Baby & Carer screenings, known by the season name For Crying Out Loud, are designed to allow those caring for babies and infants to attend current cinema releases without having to source childcare, while also creating an opportunity to get out of the house. A wide range of films are shown for these screenings and are intended to appeal to adults rather than targeted at children.

Only people attending with babies or infants (children under the age of 3) will be admitted to these screenings, with an aim to allow those in attendance to feel relaxed in the environment without having to worry about crying or breastfeeding.

There are baby change facilities in the right hand side toilets next to Cinema, as well as the accessible toilet near to the Box Office off the foyer. We are able to accommodate the storage of prams and buggies in our foyer for these screenings. Baby & Carer screenings take place every Monday morning at 11am. Tickets are £5 per person (with babies of course being free!)

BSL Supported

The BSL Supported screenings at Filmhouse are a recent addition that aim to create a more inclusive environment for those in the deaf community.

The screenings have a BSL interpreter in the foyer to answer any questions visitors may have or assist with the purchasing of tickets or snacks.

Captions are displayed on screen for all of our BSL Supported screenings.

A sheet that summarises the plot details and main characters is available from the Box Office before and after the screening.

Currently we have BSL Supported screenings every third Sunday of every month. They are priced at £5 per ticket.

Captioned

Captioned screenings offer a service for our deaf and hard of hearing visitors that displays additional auditory information on the screen.

As well as showing the dialogue, descriptive subtitles provide information on other significant sounds. For example, when something is being sung; when a phone rings; when a door slams. This extra information allows customers using subtitles at access the film more fully.

Our captioned screenings are on at a variety of times of day, ranging from early afternoon to late evening to accommodate the differing schedules of our visitors.

We aim to show a wide range of our English language films with captions, but these screenings are dependent on the availability of the materials provided to us by the film distribution companies.
